Surviving divorce is no easy feat. Today’s devotion and prayer is for those who have gone through a divorce and are still struggling with pain, anxiety, and uncertainty about the future.
Feeling the world has been pulled from under your feet.
“It’s over.”
Two little words softly spoken, yet her whole world fell apart. When Susan’s husband told her that he wanted a divorce, she tried everything she could think of to save her marriage. She pleaded. She offered to go for counseling with him. She sought advice from the mature women in their church. She read every book on marriage she could lay her hands on and watched marriage counselling videos online. She spent endless hours in prayer.
Psalm 38:8 (ISV) I am weak and utterly crushed; I cry out in distress because of my heart’s anguish.
Coming from a broken home herself she vowed that she would never get divorced. She was going to do it right… and yet there she was.
Despite her pleading and prayers and all her best efforts, the divorce was finalized 8 months later. 3 years and 5 months after they first got married it was all over. Susan was shattered by her failure as she saw it. Her heart was broken.
Sometimes even though you’re doing everything right, life deals you a blow that you think is impossible to recover from. You’re praying and fasting and reading all the right books and you still have to watch in anguish as someone you love deeply walk away from you.
When you’ve been severely wounded and you’re struggling with loss, God can lift you out of the quicksand. It will take time before you feel like your feet are planted on rock again. But be confidant in this; you are held in His perfect embrace, dear friend.
Standing on Solid Ground
Psalm 40:1-2 I waited expectantly for the LORD, and he took notice of me and heard my cry. He plucked me out of a pit of confusion, even out of the quicksand; he placed my feet on a rock and established my steps.
Heavenly Father, help me to focus on You in the middle of this time of loss. Lift me out of this darkness and set my feet back on solid ground. Hold onto me in these moments when it feels like my world is destroyed. Grant me the strength to move forward and let me know in my soul that my life and my heart will heal. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
